No Experience Required!  

 Learn the basics of colour theory, the elements & principals of design while we explore a variety of art exercises to warm up and build confidence before moving on to our large canvases.

Never painted before? Seasoned Artist? This class is for everyone. Group and personalized instruction by Artist and Instructor Karen J. Booth. Bring a lunch and enjoy 5 hours of creative fun while producing a large (16'‘ x 20”) canvas you can be proud of.

About your instructor – Karen J. Booth is a practicing Artist and Designer living in Sidney. Her fine and functional art is in collections all over the world and her work has been featured in magazines and newspapers. She currently has original artworks and select cushion designs in the Artist’s Gallery at Butchart Gardens. A former project designer for magazines and books, such as Woman’s Day, Crafts, Better Homes and Gardens and Family Circle, Karen has taught over 3,000 individuals a variety of art, craft and design courses. You will create an instant autumn garden! Container gardens are a great way to enjoy seasonal splashes of colour.  We will mix eye popping blooms with rustic grasses and foliage in a square 14”x 14” plastic pot and top it off with some vines and a pumpkin! This will be a fairly large style planter.

Living Wall Art

In this class you will mount a Staghorn Fern on a cedar board with a rope hanger. Staghorn Ferns are one of the most fascinating plants to use in home décor.  They can be in a planter, but they can also be mounted on a board and hung on your wall.

Dee will also demonstrate how to make Kokedama balls (moss balls) with tropical plants to hang (demo only)

This fall do a little something less traditional than a classic wreath! This hanging tin planter that is brimming with blooms and fall décor will greet your guests beautifully on your front door! You could also transition this into Christmas with fresh greens and berries and bows; Dee will show you how!

If you choose not to hand this planter on your door, you can leave the hanger off and place it on a table.

Fall Fest

We are celebrating Fall at Patio Gardens! 

 We are offering specials, an information session on “How to Take Care of Your Garden Mums”, apple cider and popcorn.  Enjoy photo ops with our decorated vintage truck! There will be a scavenger hunt for the kids for a small prize!  FREE “Make it and Take It” mini-pumpkin painting for the kids and a mini pumpkin carved with a small arrangement inside, for the adults.

The “Make it and Take It, the “Mum Info session” and kids scavenger hunt will run for the duration of the day.

“Helping Hands” in your garden!  Hypertufa is made from a mix of concrete, peat moss and perlite.  Outfitted with a dusk mask and gloves, we will make a pair of rapid set concrete hands in surgical gloves that you will take home to set.  We will demonstrate how to take off the gloves and create a succulent planting. You will take home all the soil, fertilizer and succulents to plant your hands up once they set.  All supplies included.

This interesting and informative workshop will teach you how to make your own herb infused oils and vinegars! It will be taught by Master Herbalist, Betty Norton.

We will be making two different oils; one spicy and one with a gentle flavour.

And then we will make a few different vinegars; an apple cider vinegar with a spicy twist, a berry vinegar and a dressing vinegar.

We will walk you through step by step and you will be able to take home a small bottle of vinegar and oil .

The Bountiful Planter

This fall pot combines height, texture and seasonal splashes of colour! It will be full of eye popping blooms, grasses, foliages, branches and mini pumpkins to last the season. We will create it in a plastic drop-in pot (this is a pot you can drop in to another pot or wrap it in a burlap sack to take home).  Approximate size will be 24” high and 18” wide.

Join Master Herbalist Betty Norton in discovering several effective herbal remedies that can be used for simple first aid. We will create some of these together so that you have the beginnings of an herbal first aid kit and will have recipes and techniques to take home to further personalize your kit. She will share some of the local plants that are safe and effective helpers.

During our time together she will teach you how to make:

- folk tincture
- herbal salves
- herbal spray
- will talk about compresses and poultices
- keep the critters away bug spray
- liniment
-....and more!

These remedies will assist with scrapes, cuts, bug bites, rashes, and the list goes on!

For hummingbirds a small container garden can provide a smorgasbord of nectar-rich flowers.  When attracting hummingbirds, the shape of the flower can be just as important as the colour.  We will create a simple container garden with plants to provide a bounty of beautiful blooms that will last the entire season.  This will be a 14” container and will thrive in morning sun and afternoon shade.  I will also share a few hummingbird feeding facts!

To start our “New” Spring Workshop season we are offering a beautiful Bucket Planter bursting with spring bulbs of tulips, daffodils, muscari and moss, pussy willow sticks, a nest and eggs.  Also learn the technique of aging galvanized metal in this workshop.  This design can be made from approximately 18”- 24” tall and wide depending on where you would like to display it.
